TODAY, May 7th, is CHILDHOOD DEPRESSION AWARENESS DAY For more information contact the National Mental Health Association www.nmha.org/children/green/index.cfm Keep Kids Mentally Healthy (Tips for Parents) Follow these basic tips to give your child a fighting chance against mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and behavioral disorders. While we have little or no control over our family histories, we can do something to help prevent our kids from suffering mental illness. Identifying Childhood Depression - The World Health Organization and the World Bank have determined that depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide in market economies among individuals 5 years and older. Yes, I said 5 years and older! The fact is that mental health problems can occur in 1 and 5 children at any given time. Learn the signs and ignore the stigma! Lets help our kids grow up happy and well adjusted. Depression and Suicide - Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15- to 24-year-olds and the sixth leading cause of death for 5- to 14-year-olds. Attempted suicides are even more common.
