Superbly written for both parents and professionals; the book is extremely readable with all technical terms and programs explained in very clear detail. Karen Foli manages to touch on all the aspects of her 'journey,' ranging in discussion about her feelings of guilt/adequacy as a mom, the possible genetic aspects of her son's auditory processing disorder, the frustration of dealing with certified professionals whose attitudes vary from regarding her son as an information unit for clinical study to really looking at the entire little boy who is struggling with many aspects of his young life. As a speech/language pathologist, at times I admit I felt embarassed with the way this mom was treated by people in my own field. I found myself nodding along with certain passages that described Dr. Foli's queries regarding testing, diagnosis, treatment, expanded programming to home and school going without either answers or, in some cases, going without even acknowledgment. This book was written from an 'analytic heart;' Dr. Foli's emotions stayed well balanced with her ability to continually incorporate her intellectual self in finding answers for her son. I would very highly recommend this book to parents, educators, support services and administrators in school systems. This would also be an excellent choice for required reading at the graduate level in any field that deals with diagnosing, treatment plans, and educating parents and fellow professionals about auditory processing disorders. Also an excellent book written from a more clinical perspective. This
is more of a "how to" and "what to expect" expose
when trying to determine if a (your) child has auditory processing disorder.
Dr. Bellis clearly explains different APD scenarios, explains how language
and learning are affected/impacted by APD and in a very organized way,
describes APD at five different developmental stages, ranging from infants
to adults. Dr. Bellis explains for parents what to expect when working
with the child's school system and what to do when parents and the school's
educational team do not agree. Dr. Bellis gives numerous, well elaborated
examples of how to cope with APD in both structured educational plans
as well as on one's own in real Life. She offers excellent strategies
to the person with APD on how to 'code' incoming information, sequence
it, remember it and, when applicable, respond.
The author also discusses techniques which have been and are being used
with auditory processing disorders. This is perhaps the only section I
found disappointing, particularly with regard to Dr. Bellis' treatment
of auditory integration therapy. Dr. Bellis cited one study, which I am
quite familiar with and whose final analysis was based on a flawed design
of post-treatment evaluation. Based on this one study, Dr. Bellis basically
indicated her own very strong bias against auditory integration therapy.
Were I a parent reading this, I would have dismissed this treatment as
a possiblity for my child. As a practicing Speech/language Pathologist
and Auditory Integration Therapist, however, I would have to actively
disagree with the premise on which Dr. Bellis based her brief discussion
of this type of therapy.
Dr. Bellis made several strong, valid points on the need for further research,
better diagnostic identification tools and effective treatment plans.
I would definitely recommend this book to parents and professionals in
