Alcohol
abuse is a serious disease. It affects everyone involved, not just the
drinker themselves, and can ruin lives and destroy families. However,
thanks to two excellent programs based on the Alcoholics Anonymous program,
Al-Anon and Alateen, there is help for friends and families of alcoholics.
With Al-Anon and Alateen you can learn about and understand your loved
ones disease and how you as a family member are affected and begin recovery.
You will learn ways to cope as well as find a support system that can
nurture you through this difficult time. You CAN change the future...one
day at a time.
Al-Anon:
Is for family and
friends of an alcoholic
Is separate from
Alcoholics Anonymous
Is based on the twelve
steps and twelve traditions from the AA programs
Is compatible with
professional treatment
Alateen:
Is designed from
the Al-Anon program, but focuses on younger friends and family up to
the age of 19
Members conduct
their own meetings with the guidance of an Al-Anon sponsor
It follows the same
Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, and principles as Al-Anon
Al-Anon and Alateen members receive help by:
Attending meetings
on a regular basis
Making telephone
contact with other members
Reading Al-Anon/Alateen
literature
Having a sponsor
Applying the Twelve
Steps of recovery to their lives
