Be sure to inform your doctor of your infant feeding decisions as well.
Options while Breast-Feeding
Condoms - 86% effective
Implant (NORPLANT) - Lowest expected rate of pregnancy is
.09%. Inserted into the upper arm, only one in 1,000 becomes pregnant.
Diaphragm - 80% effective (you may need to be refitted after
birth)
Cervical Cap - with spermicide - 60-80% effective but can
be difficult to position correctly.
Paragard IUD - 99.2% effective
Withdrawal - 81% effective
Rhythm Method - 75% effective (not reliable until after 3
mos. post delivery)
Breast-Feeding - 98% effective (if you are nursing 100% of
the time with no supplementing at all)
Tubal Ligation - 99.5% effective (can be performed during
c-section births)
Vasectomy - 99.85% effective
Micronor (Oral Contraceptive) - 99% effective if taken every
single day at exactly the same time of day. This is a less potent
version of oral contraceptives prescribed for non-breast feeding women.
Also known as the mini pill.
Other Options (not recommended for breast-feeding
moms)
NuvaRing® - a soft, flexible ring about two inches in
diameter - 99% effective when used properly once a month. Self inserted.
Oral Contraceptives - Usually taken daily in pill form -
95% effective when taken as directed.
Ortha Evra® Patch - Once a week birth control, can be
used in place of the pill or oral contraceptives - 99% effective.
Progestasert IUD - 98% effective- Doctor inserted.
