Try to visit the school your child will attend, including the classroom, cafeteria,
playground and bathroom (make sure they know how to use public toilets). Try to
introduce him/her to their new teacher.
Remember
not to label children's clothing, backpack, lunchbox or other items with the child's
name. Try using initials for identification OR write on the inside of the garment
or accessory.
Shop
for new clothes and school supplies to get your child excited about school. Certainly
use the hand-me-downs, but one or two new things will be helpful.
Walk
with your child to the school bus, learning the route with him/her, pointing out
landmarks on the way. Talk about the rules of bus safety or walking with a buddy
to and from school.
Be
sure your child knows his/her full name, address and phone number. Also write
the information on a little card and tape it to the inside of their shoe.
Be
careful not to make too big a deal about the play and games aspect of school.
Tell them that learning is important business, but it can also be fun.
