An obstetrician is a licensed and/or board certified medical doctor trained to handle all types of pregnancies, births and post partum patients.

It is recommended that if your pregnancy, birth or post partum conditions have any foreseen complications, an experienced obstetrician is the only choice. For help choosing one right for you, see Choosing an OB/GYN.

A certified nurse midwife is a specially trained registered nurse or nurse practitioner who deals with normal pregnancies, normal births and normal post partum patients. Many obstetrical practice groups today include a certified nurse midwife among their practitioners as an option for their patients. Parents-to-be who plan to experience an at home birth may choose a midwife.

Some of the benefits of using a midwife include:

   -   Midwives stress good nutrition for their clients.
   -   Midwives stress education and share useful information, then leave the decision making to the client.
   -   Midwives stress natural birth and breast-feeding.
   -   Midwives are non-interventionists.
   -   Midwives trust a woman's power to give birth successfully.
   -   Midwives are supportive guardians of the normal birth.
   -   Midwives support vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC).
   -   Midwives prefer homeopathic methods.

Choosing between a Midwife and MD is a personal decision. Careful considerations of individual circumstances are weighed. Discuss your options with your physician, family members and friends to make the best choice for you and your unborn baby.
