Ear infections are extremely painful in many cases. Here are some things you can do to help ease your child's pain until the antibiotics kick in:
Apply a warm heating pad or compress to the outside of the ear. (Not too hot as to burn the child's skin)
Give acetaminophen or ibuprophen for pain (ask your doctor what he recommends for your child's age.) Ibuprophen works longer and in some cases, both medicines can be layered for fever reduction or extreme pain.
Have the child sip a cup of warm tea with honey (*use honey only if over 2 years of age) and lemon. Swallowing warm liquids can sooth the throat (adenoid) pain.
Have the child rest on his/her back or on the side away from the affected ear. Turning on the side of the affected ear will cause medications to run out and may cause additional pain to the affected ear.
Preventing Ear Infections
- Avoid smoking or exposure to second hand smoke and do not expose children to second hand smoke
- Avoid exposure to air pollution
- Keep you and your child up to date with recommended immunizations
- Breastfeed your baby for 12 months or more if possible
- Bottle feed your baby in the upright position
