Place baby on his back with brightly colored toys around him to encourage
rolling.
Use a play gym to encourage reaching.
Hold baby in front of a mirror and watch him smile!
Hold baby face to face in your lap. Talk and watch for
responses.
Sing Sing Sing!
Watch for signs of over stimulation: crying, turning away, closing eyes,
fussiness. Respect his need to stop playing.
5 - 8 Months
Help baby practice sitting by supporting him. Propping a baby with pillows
or blankets or in the corner of a playpen helps too. Never leave a baby
unattended in this position.
Encourage reaching by placing toys in reach.
Sing songs using hand motions like:
- Itsy Bitsy Spider
- Pat-A-Cake
- How big is Baby? SOOOOOO BIG!!
Hold your baby firmly and Dance! (Remembering never to shake or toss a
baby).

Read books! Babies love the sound of your voice and even at an early age,
they love to see pictures of other babies. Choose books with photographs of real

Support your baby standing, sitting, crawling or walking. Encourage him by
placing toys just out of reach and see how he invents ways of getting to them!
Blow bubbles!
Babies love to fill up containers and empty them over and over again.
Read Books! Babies love the sound of your voice and even at an early age,
they love to see pictures of other babies. Choose books with photographs of real
children and chunky books. Point out things in the book. The next time you read
it, your baby might surprise you and point to those same objects. (see our

Mimic babys sounds and offer new ones for him to copy.
Dance! Babies love music and moving to it. Even while sitting many babies
bounce and sway to music.
Ask baby, Where is Daddy? and watch him find him.
Partially cover a favorite toy and see if baby can find it.
Cover your face or head with a pillow and call baby to find you! They love
that game!
Games that involve water, like the bathtub, pool or even a dish full of
water is great fun! Babies love to splash!
