In this season of decorating and festivities, Robyn's
Nest would like to remind parents and grandparents of some safety precautions
when little ones are afoot.
Lights
and Candles
Inspect all lights and cords for fraying and exposed wires
Plug no more than 3 strands into any one extension or outlet
Secure loose cords away from children's reach
Never run electrical cords under carpets or rugs
Never leave candles burning unattended
Always place candles out of children's reach (remember some kids are
extremely clever. They pull over chairs or step stools to reach what
they want) Keep matches, lighters and the like out of children's reach
Do not place candles near drapery or other upholstery that might catch
fire
Christmas
Tree
Robyn's Nest recommends a flame retardant fake tree. If you choose fresh,
be sure to find a green tree whose needles are firmly attached. Loose
needles could indicate a dry tree.
Use a wide based stand or screw your stand to a large piece of plywood
to prevent it from falling over.
Keep tree watered and cover basin with a skirt. You can make one by
cutting a hole and a slit on one side of an old plastic or cloth round
tablecloth.
Cut back lower branches to prevent eye injuries to little ones.
Secure the tree to the wall with screws and rope if you have a particularly
mischievous child. (Mine pulled over the tree twice in one season. We
not only lost most of our decorations in shards of glass, but the poor
kid was nearly crushed and shredded!)
Place glass ornaments high on the tree or put them away until your children
are a bit older. Use wooden, plastic and plush ornaments on lower branches.
Be cautious of wooden ornaments that might come apart posing a choking
hazard.
Hang ornaments by the loops instead of hooks on lower branches.
Save the icicle tinsel for when children are older.
Poisons
Keep alcoholic drinks and containers safely out of children's reach.
This includes baking ingredients such as vanilla which contains high
alcohol content.
Keep poisonous holiday plants out of reach including:
Holly
and Mistletoe berries
Amaryllis
Azalea
Boxwood
Christmas Rose
Crown of Thorns
English Ivy
Jerusalem Cherry While
Poinsettias are not poisonous, they can cause skin irritation and stomach
upset if ingested.
Robyn's Nest wishes every a blessed and safe holiday season!
