The flu is an illness caused by the influenza
virus. There are three different types (A, B, and C). Different strains
of each type lead to reoccurrence of the illness during one's lifetime.
The flu virus is most commonly spread during the fall to early spring.
It is spread by hand to hand contact, indirect hand to hand contact, and
by droplet spread (coughing and/or sneezing).
Symptoms usually last from a few days to a week and include:
fever
chills
fatigue
headache
cough
nasal congestion
body aches
sore throat
abdominal pain and vomiting
A good way to prevent the flu is good hand washing and covering
your nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing.
Another good preventative measure is to get a Flu
Vaccine during the early fall season.
Treatment
Acetaminophen for fever and pain (AVOID ASPIRIN because this may lead
to Reye Syndrome which can affect the liver and the brain). SEE Aspirin
and Children
Bed rest and plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
There are antiviral medications that need to be prescribed by a physician,
but these are not commonly used in otherwise healthy children.
