Infant with Rubella

Rubella is known more commonly as "German Measles". It is caused by a virus. The incubation period is 14-21 days. The disease is mild. Your child should be completely recovered in 3-4 days. Complications are rare, however complications to the unborn child can be very bad. Deafness, cataracts, heart defects, encephalitis and retardation could occur.

PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD AVOID ANYONE WITH RUBELLA

Symptoms include:

   -   Pink/red spots all over the body
   -   Rash begins on the face and moves rapidly down the body within 24 hours
   -   Enlarged lymph nodes (swollen glands) at back of neck
   -   Mild fever
   -   Child never received rubella vaccine

No treatment is necessary. You can give acetaminophen for fever, sore throat or other aches/pains.

Exposure of Women to Rubella:

   -   The non-pregnant woman exposed to Rubella should avoid pregnancy for the following 3 months.
   -   A pregnant woman should see her obstetrician. If she has already received the Rubella vaccine, she and the baby are probably protected. She should have a blood test to determine her immunity against Rubella.

GET YOUR CHILD IMMUNIZED AGAINST RUBELLA

   -   The Rubella vaccine is given at 15 months of age.
   -   It is safe to immunize the child whose mother is pregnant.

Call your Doctor if:

   -   The rash becomes purple
   -   Your child starts acting very sick
   -   If the rash becomes itchy
   -   Fever lasts more than 3 days
   -   You have other questions or concerns
