Nationwide, some 105 babies of nearly four million born in 1998 were found abandoned in public places; 33 infants were found dead.

To most people the act of abandoning a child is unthinkable! We hear the stories and wonder "How could a mother do that to her own flesh and blood?" "What would possess someone to leave a helpless infant to perish alone?" The truth is that we may never understand a fearful teen with a secret, a mentally ill parent, a desperate father, a drug/alcohol crazed mind, broken spirits and wounded souls.

There is help.

Baby Safe Haven Laws have been passed in 37 states to date and more are underway!

These laws allow for a person with an unwanted baby or pregnancy to turn the baby over unharmed to a receiving organization without the threat of prosecution. Normally a hospital emergency room, responsible adult, manned fire department or other facility.

Many states allow up to 30 days for the mother to change her mind before the baby becomes freed up for adoption. This gives the mother a chance get the help she may need and provides a safe haven for the child.

Most states demand a baby be no older than 72 hours when relinquished (a few extend the age limit to 90 days).

The baby must also be visibly unharmed in order for the mother to be released after giving up her baby.
