Sally Houtman, M.S. joins the
Robyn's Nest senior consulting team as our Grandparent Advisor. Her unique
education, experience and upbringing qualify her as an expert in this field. In
addition to being a counselor with over 13 years of professional experience,
Sally Houtman was herself raised by her grandparents. Her book " To
Grandma's House We-- Stay: When You Have to Stop Spoiling Your Grandchildren
and Start Raising Them" is the end result of a lifetime of personal
experience with being raised in nontraditional family circumstances. She has
combined this with many years of professional experience counseling families
who are struggling to overcome similar obstacles.
Sally Houtman earned Bachelor's Degrees in both English and Psychology before going on to earn a Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Boston University's Sargent College of Allied Health Professions. She has worked for 2 1/2 years as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of Massachusetts and for 1 1/2 years as a Staff Therapist in a Boston area Methadone treatment program before moving to Los Angeles in 1990.
From 1990 to present, the author has been employed as a Chemical Dependency Counselor in outpatient Chemical Dependency treatment for Kaiser Permanente, the nation's largest and leading HMO. As a Chemical Dependency counselor, she continues to see daily the reality of parents who, incapacitated by addiction and other problems, call upon grandparents to step into the parenting role when they are unable.
Sally is the mother of a beautiful baby boy. He is the light and joy of her life!
