Talk to kids about tragedy

In this time of confusion and concern by all peoples of good faith around the country and the world, it can be difficult for you and your children to process what has happened in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

Your children will be hearing and seeing very sad, frightening and confusing images on TV and in newspapers. They will hear adult conversations and much from their friends.

As with any tragic loss or devastating experience life brings, following our guide below will help everyone involved, most especially, your children.

You will be sad, angry and confused.

Be comforting, but honest:
You don't know why this happened.
You don't know who did it.
You and your children are safe, and you will be there for them.

You will answer all their questions as well as you can.

If you have family in the military, you will be additionally involved. With the hightened alert for all military personnel, all who know these families can reach out to be supportive.

Whatever family schedules you have, be sure to keep everything as normal and supportive as you can.

Watch television together, but be aware that some images are very graphic.

Explain what's happening in terms your child can understand.

Answer their questions with honesty.

Give lots of hugs.

Pray together for all, including your own family.

For additional support, you can meet with a family counselor or grief counselor.
