Sometime around the 2nd year, your toddler
will hit the terrible twos.
This simply means that your baby is gaining independence and is trying
to become his or her own person. Some of the attributes of a two year
old are listed under Growth and Development
2-3 Years.
Other characteristics you can expect in this search for self include:
Impatience - Your toddler wants was she wants NOW.
Hitting, Biting and Kicking - Physically lashing out is a means
of communicating for your 2 year old when he is frustrated or angry.
This is the tantrum year as well.
NO - In an effort to become an independent little
person, your toddler will use the word no frequently. This
is by no means a determined effort to defy you. It is her way of letting
you know that she is gaining a sense of self and power. This is an extremely
confusing time for your child. Patience and understanding are key.
Needs Routine - With so much happening in the toddlers
emotional development, routine is security. Their need for daily routines
helps toddlers to know what to expect. Of course there will be days
when this is not possible, but expect difficulties with your young one
on these days. Taking your toddler grocery shopping during his naptime
is a tantrum waiting to happen.
Mood Changes - Yes, you will experience both ends of the emotional
spectrum at this age. Your toddler is developing emotional balance and
this takes time. Sharp mood swings are inevitable.
Baby Behavior - Your toddler will revert to baby behavior as
well. This is a way of his coping with his new found skills and yet
underdeveloped emotional skills. It is okay to respond to this behavior
like you would a baby. However, it is not recommended that you encourage
it.
