Most vomiting and diarrhea is caused by what is called "gastroenteritis" or an irritation or inflammation of the stomach. The most important treatment for this condition is to control the child’s diet so that the stomach can rest.

Day 1: Give clear fluids frequently in very small amounts. Try 1 or 2 ounces at a time for the first six hours.

Clear fluids include popcicles ,Gatorade or Pedialyte, ice chips, gelatin or "flat" soda (such as ginger ale) for older children and Pedialyte or Ricelyte for infants under the age of 1 year. DO NOT OFFER FORMULA, MILK PRODUCTS OR SOLID FOODS.

Day 2: Start the "B.R.A.T." diet

Bananas, Rice, Apples and Toast. Of course, clear broth and tea are also fine. Say clear of orange and citrus juices. They are too acidic and may irritate the child’s stomach.

Day 3: Gradually return them to a regular diet.

Avoid greasy, fatty, fried or spicy foods.

Immediately Notify Your Pediatrician or Go to the Emergency Room if:

Vomiting and diarrhea continue more than 12 hours for an infant or more than 24 hours for a child over 1 year.

Child shows signs of dehydration; does not urinate for 8 hours, has no tears when crying or has dry appearing lips and mouth.

Child has a high fever with vomiting and diarrhea

Child had blood in vomit or diarrhea.

Your gut instinct tells you child is sicker or sleepier than expected for this type of a germ.

Vomiting and diarrhea can be quite serious for some children in some instances. Always notify your pediatrician when your child becomes ill and monitor your child closely.
